Welcome to Loughborough Boys Grammar School

Head

Helen Foster

Stop. Stop and think about education.

Why?

Because it is probably the single most important thing to think about, right now. We have all realised that the world is changing at an increasingly fast pace. Like it or not, this is the world that our children will be entering. It is no longer the will to win that matters – everyone has that. It is the will to prepare to win that counts. But the old ways of preparation for ‘life’ are no longer sufficient. Now, more than ever before, we need people of integrity and clear-sighted purpose.

True, our school, has a reputation going back years for high academic achievement, but our heritage of intellectual firepower is being re-directed, re-sighted, re-focussed on the exigencies of today and of tomorrow.

However, we never sacrifice human qualities in the pursuit of academic qualifications. We know that in life after school soft skills will be hard currency for our boys. Qualifications are the price of entry. Qualities are the ticket to success. Great men contain both. And great men is what we aim to forge here. It is as simple as that.

Let me, Headmaster Helen Foster, tell you a little about how we go about doing that.

It starts with our staff because there is no such thing as a great school without great teachers.

Ours are subject specialists, not jack-of-all-trades. Ours go the extra mile, inside and outside the classroom, always.

Ours are trained to spot talent early, because each and every boy has a talent waiting to be spotted. (and once a boy becomes good at one thing, they quickly become good at something else, and something else…)

So, for all our boys, it is not about how good they are when they arrive, but about how good they want to become. Just come and talk to some of the pupils about it.

In this context, how might we describe our boys?

There is no stereotype at Loughborough Grammar School. Indeed there are common factors – hard work, academic focus, determination, a desire to learn, to improve, but there is no common type.

The academics and the artists. The try scorers and the trumpet players. The social magnets and the quiet contemplators. The magic is that everyone fits in. There is room for everyone. Nobody is left on the metaphorical bench.

How does that work?

I believe it is simple – it is because we are an all-boys school. Every day, I and all the others involved in the running of this School at every level have only one question ‘What is best for the boys?’

That gives a vital focus and a clarity of purpose.

Simply allowing a boy to be himself, free from awkwardness and the preoccupation with self-image, is an invaluable gift. It allows our boys to grow up true.

First, to discover who they are and where their passions lie and then to be true to themselves. To be free to try hard. To be unselfconscious about throwing themselves headfirst into something with no guarantee of success, and yes, to give a damn!

So much of happiness, of friendships, of contribution to a bigger whole depends on this.

They will leave here able to say with conviction ‘I am happy with myself and am good at being me.’

As they go out into the world, there truly is no better preparation than that.
